Stephen Curry makes 4000th three on eve of 37th birthday

Stephen Curry 4000

SAN FRANCISCO: Stephen Curry gave himself an early birthday present on Thursday night, by making history once again in a game that saw him score his 4000th three, as the Golden State Warriors beat out the Sacramento Kings by 26 points, 130 – 104.

It was a rather tame night from the Golden State star, as he scored only 11 points, allowing Draymond Green, who was tied for the game high in points with DeMar DeRozan with 23, lead the team to a emphatic victory.

However, six of Curry’s 11 points came from two threes, the exact amount he needed to reach yet another milestone that reifies his place on top of the list of greatest shooters ever. Curry now has 4000 threes made in the regular season, and a total of 4618 when considering the playoffs.

Records on records

He’s the first ever to reach the milestone, having reached the number in 1013 games. It’s yet another record added to an already hall of fame career. Curry was also the fastest to reach 1000, 2000, and 3000 career threes. Number 30 is first on the all-time three-point list by a wide margin, with James Harden in second place, trailing by 873 as of March 14, 2025.

The Warriors point guard has previously led the league in total threes made in a season a stunning eight times. This season, he has made 253 shots from deep so far, the third most currently. While still incredibly impressive considering the four-time champion and Olympic gold medalist just turned 37 years old, it does beg the question; can Curry’s records be broken?

Both Anthony Edwards and Mikal Bridges are ahead of Curry this season in made threes, as the two have scored 262 and 261 respectively. Their success from deep, both sporting three-point percentages above 40 per cent and thus above Curry’s 39.8 per cent, is a testament to the changing nature of the game. A change that Curry himself has brought on.

Are they breakable?

Three is greater than two and that logic has burrowed itself deep into many teams around the league since Curry transformed the Warriors into the National Basketball Associations’s (NBA) latest dynasty, winning four championships since 2015 and appearing in the finals a whopping six times in that same stretch. The most recent NBA champions, the Boston Celtics, may be the best example of that logic taking hold. On the same night as Curry’s 4000th three, Boston attempted an astounding 63 shots from deep, setting a franchise record.

The changing landscape of the league has led media and fans alike to claim the game of basketball is being ruined. Regardless, its clear that championship winning teams believe more shots from beyond the arc will result in more success. And as they continue to shoot more threes each season, Curry’s records may start looking more breakable.

But, even if they are broken eventually, it won’t be for a long time. Curry is still going strong and the Warriors are looking re-energised in the final stretch to the playoffs. Golden State are 13-1 when their blockbuster trade acquisition, Jimmy Butler, is on the court. With the new found joy, and space, the Warriors’ star is playing with, Curry will likely continue setting records for the next few years at the very least.
