US bird flu outbreak: Interspecies spread confirmed

In May 2024, DW reported that US health authorities had confirmed HPAI H5N1 was spreading among dairy cattle in nine US states.

Bird flu virus particles were found in tissue samples taken from one dairy cow sent to slaughter at a United States (US) meat processing plant, but none were detected in samples from 95 other cattle, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) said on Friday.

Person with bird flu died in Mexico: WHO

It was the first laboratory-confirmed human case of infection with an influenza A(H5N2) virus globally and the first avian H5 virus reported in a person in Mexico, according to the WHO.

Bird flu outbreaks since 2022 have forced poultry farmers around the world to cull their stocks in attempts to stop the virus spreading
