WEB DESK: Apple is reportedly working on a new version of its budget-friendly Apple Watch SE, featuring a plastic casing, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

In his “Power On” newsletter, Gurman highlighted Apple’s plans to replace the current anodized aluminum casing with a rigid plastic one. This strategic move aims to reduce the production costs of the Apple Watch SE, potentially lowering its retail price.

The existing model is priced at $249, whereas its main competitor, the Samsung Galaxy Watch FE, is available for $199.

This approach mirrors Apple’s 2013 release of the iPhone 5C, which also utilised a plastic exterior. Despite its vibrant color options, the iPhone 5C faced criticism for its plastic casing, with some perceiving it as a downgrade from the premium metal finishes of previous models.

Additionally, there were concerns that the price remained too high for what was seen as a less luxurious product.

By introducing a plastic-cased Apple Watch SE, Apple may be looking to attract more cost-conscious consumers while maintaining its presence in the competitive smartwatch market.

The move could position the Apple Watch SE as a more accessible option, aligning its price closer to rival products.
