Mass production of iPhone 16 displays ramps up as release date approaches

Apple iPhone 16

WEB DESK: Apple’s suppliers have significantly increased the production of OLED panels for the forthcoming iPhone 16, following a substantial ramp-up previously reported in July.

Both Samsung Display and LG Display began initial production of these panels in June and have since accelerated their output.

Apple is forecasting around 90 million iPhone 16 shipments for this year, but the production of OLED panels is expected to exceed this, with an estimated 120 million units being manufactured—about 30 per cent more than the number of iPhones projected to be shipped.

By year-end, Samsung Display is anticipated to provide approximately 80 million OLED panels, while LG Display is set to deliver around 43 million panels. Both companies are reportedly on track to meet these production goals.

The OLED panels are being dispatched to Apple’s assembly partners, who will complete the assembly of the iPhone 16 models in time for the anticipated launch. Based on previous release patterns, Apple is expected to unveil the new iPhone models around mid-September, with Tuesday, 10 September, being a potential announcement date.

The new iPhone 16 series will include the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. While the design will resemble the iPhone 15, there will be notable changes in the Pro models.

The iPhone 16 Pro will feature a larger 6.3-inch display, up from 6.1 inches, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a 6.9-inch display, up from 6.7 inches. The standard models will retain their current sizes, with the iPhone 16 at 6.1 inches and the iPhone 16 Plus at 6.7 inches.

Rumours suggest that the iPhone 16 will introduce several new features, including a “Capture” button for landscape photography and video, upgraded A-series chips, enhanced camera capabilities, and the inclusion of Wi-Fi 7 and faster 5G modems in some models.
