Body of Haniyeh lands in Qatar, greeted by former Hamas leader

DOHA: The body of assassinated Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh arrived in Doha, Qatar on Thursday (August 1) ahead of his funeral and burial.

Hamas members, including former group leader, Khaled Meshaal were seen standing at the tarmac of the Doha International Airport, Ministerial Lounge waiting to receive the coffin.

Haniyeh, who was usually based in Qatar, was assassinated in the Iranian capital Tehran early on Wednesday (July 31) morning, an attack that drew threats of revenge on Israel and fuelled further concern that the conflict in Gaza was turning into a wider Middle East war.

Although the strike on Haniyeh was widely assumed to have been carried out by Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government made no claim of responsibility and said it would make no comment on the killing.

Haniyeh is due to be buried on Friday (August 2).
