- The protesting farmers vow to continue protests until demands are met
NEW DELHI: Indian farmers held a candlelight vigil on Saturday (February 24) to demonstrate against the federal government along the Punjab-Haryana border and promised to continue their protest until their demands were met.
The farmers marched holding candles to honour the death of a young protester, Shubhkaran Singh, who was allegedly killed amid violent clashes between protesting farmers and security personnel.
Raising slogans against the government, the march was held at both the Shambhu and Khanauri borders in the Indian capital’s neighbouring state.
Protesting farmers, who are mainly Sikhs and who hail from the northern state of Punjab, are demanding higher prices for their crops. They began marching to New Delhi earlier this month to press their demands on legal guarantee on floor prices of crops, among others.
Police, however, have stopped the march about 200 km (125 miles) from the capital, using water cannons and tear gas.
