Rs55 billion recovered, thousands arrested in anti-electricity theft drive

WEB DESK: The Power Division, on Tuesday, disclosed the outcome of an ongoing crackdown against electricity theft nationwide.

According to information shared by the Secretary of the Power Division, a significant amount of over Rs55 billion has been successfully recovered during the countrywide initiative.

Additionally, a total of 29,561 individuals have been apprehended in connection with electricity theft, including 20 employees of various electricity companies.

Breaking down the figures, Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) emerges at the forefront, having recovered over Rs10 billion.

Following closely is Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO), securing the second position with a recovery of Rs9 billion.

The Secretary of the Power Division noted that, as part of this effort, 272 officers from electricity companies have faced suspension due to their involvement in power theft.

It is noteworthy that the caretaker government has initiated a comprehensive crackdown on power theft nationwide to mitigate losses in the power sector and address circular debt.

The International Monetary Fund has strongly recommended Pakistan take measures to minimize circular debt in the power sector.
