Budget session kicks off as Dar woos PPP members

The National Assembly received details regarding the abolition of posts from federal ministries and subordinate institutions as part of the government’s ‘rightsizing’ initiative.

ISLAMABAD: The budget presentation session for the upcoming financial year commenced after a one-and-a-half-hour delay as the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) struggled to appease its coalition partner, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), which had threatened to boycott the proceedings over disagreements concerning the development budget.

PPP senior leader Khurshid Shah, addressing reporters prior to the session, voiced the party’s concerns regarding the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) budget. He emphasized that the PPP should have been consulted during the budget preparation process.

“It was agreed that the PSDP for the four provinces would be determined collectively,” Shah stated to the media.

In a bid to resolve the impasse, Deputy Prime Minister and PML-N leader Ishaq Dar held a meeting with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in his chambers, successfully persuading the PPP legislators to attend the session.

The budget session is under with National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq in the chair. Fiance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb is presenting the budget.
