Ex-NFL QB Robert Griffin III exits USA flag football team race

LOS ANGELES: Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III has withdrawn from the USA flag football team selection process as it prepares for upcoming international competitions and the sport’s Olympic debut in Los Angeles 2028.

The 36-year-old former Heisman Trophy winner announced on X that he was stepping away from the 2026 USA Football training camp due to a scheduling conflict. Griffin explained that a commitment involving a military veterans’ event would prevent him from attending camp, adding that he did not want to take a spot from other competing players.

In March, Griffin had been named among four quarterbacks in a 24-man training camp roster. The squad was expected to be trimmed down ahead of the International Federation of American Flag Football World Championships scheduled for August in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Since retiring from the NFL in 2020, Griffin has worked as a football analyst with ESPN and Fox. During his playing career, he was drafted second overall by Washington in 2012, won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, and earned a Pro Bowl selection in his debut season.
