Field Marshal Asim Munir reviews KP security situation during Peshawar visit

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir visited Corps Headquarters Peshawar on Tuesday, where he was given a comprehensive briefing on the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

According to the military’s media wing, Field Marshal Munir was briefed on ongoing counterterrorism operations in the province, border management measures and the operational preparedness of formations deployed in the region.

The briefing came after a deadly attack on Kohat’s old Police Lines which claimed 23 lives and left more than 100 injured. The attackers detonated an explosives-laden vehicle near a mosque during Friday prayers before storming the compound and targeting police facilities. The subsequent clearance operation concluded with eight terrorists killed, according to police.

During the visit, Field Marshal Munir praised the high morale, preparedness and professional capabilities of the officers and troops, and lauded their steadfastness in protecting the country and its people, ISPR said.

He directed the formations to remain vigilant at all times and maintain the highest level of operational readiness.

“The armed forces remain committed to defeating terrorism with the unwavering support of the nation,” ISPR quoted the army chief as saying.

He also reaffirmed the armed forces’ commitment to establishing lasting peace and stability across the country, according to the statement.

Meanwhile, eight militants were killed and six soldiers, including two officers, were martyred in an exchange of fire in Hangu district on Sunday, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The clash occurred when a security forces convoy engaged militants in the area. ISPR said Captain Abuzar Farooq, 23, from Gujranwala, and Lieutenant Sheraz Babar, 22, from Chakwal, were among those were martyred. Four other soldiers also lost their lives in the intense exchange.

Tribute to martyrs

During his visit, Field Marshal Munir also visited the Martyrs’ Memorial at Corps Headquarters and laid a floral wreath in honour of those who lost their lives defending the country and fighting terrorism.

The army chief and Chief of Defence Forces offered Fateha and paid tribute to the martyrs for their sacrifices.

“The great sacrifices of the martyrs will never be forgotten,” ISPR quoted Munir as saying.

Upon his arrival in Peshawar, the army chief was received by the Corps Commander Peshawar.
