Iran began their FIFA World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Monday, recovering from behind on two occasions to secure a point in their opening Group G fixture.
The match unfolded against the backdrop of political demonstrations, with hundreds of protesters gathering outside the stadium before kick-off to voice opposition to the government in Tehran. Inside the venue, some Iranian supporters displayed the country’s pre-1979 flag despite regulations prohibiting political symbols during the tournament.
New Zealand made an impressive start and broke the deadlock just seven minutes into the contest. Captain Chris Wood played a key role in the move, setting up Elijah Just, who converted from close range to give the Oceania side an early advantage.
Iran gradually settled into the match and increased the pressure as the first half progressed. Their efforts were rewarded in the 32nd minute when defender Ramin Rezaeian found the net from close range to restore parity. The goal sparked celebrations among Iranian supporters in the crowd and ensured the teams went into the break level.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with New Zealand once again moving in front. Just completed his brace in the 54th minute after another contribution from Wood. The forward showed composure as he lifted the ball over Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, putting his side ahead for the second time.
Iran refused to be discouraged and responded 10 minutes later. Mohammad Mohebbi rose at the back post and directed a header into the net, bringing the Asian side level once more and setting up a tense final phase of the match.
Neither team was able to find a decisive goal despite opportunities at both ends, leaving them to share the points in an entertaining encounter.
The result leaves Group G finely balanced after Belgium and Egypt also played out a 1-1 draw earlier in the day. Iran will next face Belgium in Los Angeles, while New Zealand travel to Vancouver to take on Egypt in the second round of group-stage fixtures.
For New Zealand, the draw extended a long wait for a first World Cup victory. The team, appearing at the tournament for only the third time, remain without a win in seven matches on football’s biggest stage.
Iran, meanwhile, continue their quest to reach the knockout rounds for the first time in the nation’s World Cup history. Rezaeian’s influential display earned him the Player of the Match award.
