LONDON: Serena Williams has made a sensational return to Wimbledon, stepping back onto the iconic grass courts four years after she “evolved away” from tennis.

Far from a quiet retirement, Williams has remained a global presence, balancing life as a mother of two with her venture capital business while continuing to travel and stay active beyond the sport that defined her career.

But for a champion who built her legacy on dominance and the rush of victory, life away from tennis never fully replaced the adrenaline of competition. With 23 Grand Slam singles titles to her name, the pull of the court eventually proved too strong to ignore.

Now at 44, Williams has returned to singles action at the All England Club as a wildcard entry, a move that has electrified fans and players alike. Tennis star Novak Djokovic described her comeback as “inspirational” and “epic,” adding to the excitement surrounding her return.

Speaking ahead of her match, Williams said belief remains at the core of her mindset. “You have to believe in yourself and go for any dream, no matter how wild it may be,” she told reporters, acknowledging that her game has evolved, but her competitive spirit remains unchanged.

Since her last singles appearance at the 2022 US Open, Williams has become a mother again and has also spoken openly about her fitness transformation, shedding weight as she prepared for her return to elite competition.

Looking visibly fitter and more focused, she is set to face 20-year-old Australian Maya Joint in what will be one of the most-watched matches of the tournament. Joint, who grew up idolising Williams, called the opportunity to play her a dream come true.

Fans at Wimbledon are equally divided between excitement and doubt. Many see her return as a rare chance to witness greatness once again, while others question whether age and time away from singles tennis will affect her performance at the highest level.

Williams last played singles at Wimbledon in 2022, where she exited in the first round, and last won a match at the tournament in 2019. She is also expected to compete in doubles alongside her sister Venus Williams, adding another emotional layer to her comeback.

Whatever the outcome, Serena Williams’ return has already delivered what Wimbledon thrives on most–drama, emotion, and unforgettable sporting theatre.
