Karachi hosts int’l strategic experts to debate future of warfare, maritime innovation

WEB DESK: The Maritime Centre of Excellence (MCE) has concluded a landmark international conference in the port city, bringing together a prestigious cohort of global scholars, military strategists, and tech innovators to dissect the rapidly evolving landscape of “Emerging Technologies and Future Warfare.”

The two-day summit served as a critical forum for evaluating how breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and precision-guided weaponry are fundamentally altering the nature of modern combat.

Addressing the closing session, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf highlighted that the shift towards high-tech warfare is no longer a distant prospect but a current reality that requires immediate doctrinal adaptation and a robust national response.

Strategic imperatives in the Indian ocean

A central pillar of the discussions focused on the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and its burgeoning role as a theatre for technological competition.

Experts noted that as global trade and energy security remain tethered to these waters, the integration of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) and advanced surveillance tech is becoming essential for maintaining maritime stability.

The conference underscored that Pakistan’s strategic position necessitates a proactive approach to maritime security, ensuring that the nation not only monitors but also masters the digital and kinetic tools shaping the “Security-Development Nexus” in the region.

Bridging the industry-academia divide

Beyond the frontlines, the conference issued a claron call for a structural shift in how defense innovation is fostered.

Panellists argued that the traditional silos separating military research, private industry, and academic institutions must be dismantled to achieve true self-reliance.

By fostering a collaborative ecosystem, the speakers suggested that indigenous military technology ranging from sophisticated missile systems to AI-driven logistics can be accelerated.

This synergy is viewed as the “silver bullet” for developing home-grown solutions that can withstand the pressures of a complex geostrategic environment while bolstering the national economy through high-end technological exports.
