Kidderminster score twice despite flurry of chances for South Shields

South Shields FC saw their promotion hopes come under pressure as visiting Kidderminster Harriers FC secured a crucial victory with two early second-half goals at the 1st Cloud Arena.

The visitors took control of the contest within the opening 48 minutes of the second half, with Donnelly and Cooper finding the net to hand the third-placed side a commanding advantage against the team sitting second in the table.

Despite the setback, South Shields created a flurry of chances in search of a comeback. Fans on social media reacted to one major missed opportunity, posting, “48′ SO CLOSE! A flurry of chances come Shields’ way, Blackett’s and McGurk’s shots are blocked, it falls to Finch, but his effort clears the bar.”

Supporters were left frustrated by their side’s inability to convert chances, especially given the club’s strong recent form, having lost only two of their previous five matches.

“That was a shambles, need to be putting chances away like that,” one supporter wrote online following the defeat.

Many fans described the result as unexpected, considering South Shields entered the match above Kidderminster in the standings.

The National League North title race went down to the wire as Fylde finished top of the table with 101 points from 46 matches, narrowly edging out South Shields on goal difference despite both teams ending level on points.

Fylde sealed the championship after recording 32 wins during the campaign, while South Shields impressed defensively throughout the season, conceding just 35 goals.

Kidderminster finished third with 87 points after winning 25 matches, while Macclesfield FC and Buxton FC completed the top five.
