Lahore metro bus: Over 50 employees suddenly dismissed

LAHORE: A private company involved in maintaining electric escalators on Lahore’s metro bus system has terminated the contracts of 50 employees on Wednesday.

The sudden dismissal raised anger and concerns over contractual adherence and potential financial misconduct. The company was obligated under its contract with the Punjab authorities to ensure the functionality of escalators at each station. This meant that two workers were deployed per station.

Initially, the requirement was met with two employees assigned to every metro station. However, on International Labour Day, the company unilaterally dismissed 50 employees without prior notice.

The company also reduced the number of employees stationed at escalators. This left the metro bus stations understaffed and compromising commuter safety.

According to source, the company has been diverting funds earmarked for employee salaries despite being funded by the Punjab Masstransit Authority.

The dismissed workers are demanding justice and urging a “thorough investigation” to hold responsible parties “accountable”.
