MIDDLESBROUGH: Middlesbrough and Southampton could not be separated as their Championship play-off semi-final first leg ended in a goalless draw, despite a game packed with intensity and drama.
The build-up to the clash had already turned heated after Middlesbrough accused Southampton of spying on a training session at Rockliffe Park, with the Saints later facing charges from the EFL. That controversy added extra spice to an already high-stakes encounter.
On the pitch, Middlesbrough dominated the first half completely, firing in 17 shots without reply. They went closest when Tommy Conway struck the inside of the post, but a breakthrough goal never arrived.
Southampton, however, grew into the contest after the break and almost stole it late on, with captain Taylor Harwood-Bellis crashing a powerful header against the crossbar.
In the end, neither side could find the net, leaving everything finely balanced ahead of the second leg at St Mary’s on Tuesday night.
Interestingly, this is the second time in three seasons that both Championship play-off semi-final first legs have finished 0-0, underlining just how tight the race for Premier League football has become.
The tie also highlights how quickly fortunes have changed. Earlier in the season, Middlesbrough had beaten Southampton 4-0 and were well clear of them in the table. But after 46 games, the sides finished level on points, with Southampton edging ahead on goal difference to secure fourth place.
While Boro’s form dipped badly in the final stretch, Southampton surged late on, collecting 47 points from their last 20 games to storm into the play-offs and set up this finely poised semi-final.
Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough line up in a 3-4-2-1 formation with Brynn in goal. The back three consists of Ayling on the right, Fry in the centre and A. Madsen on the left.
Brittain and Targett operate as wing-backs, while A. Morris and McGree anchor the midfield. Whittaker and Conway play just behind lone striker Szmodics in attack.
Southampton
Southampton set up in a 4-2-3-1 system with Perez starting in goal. The defence features Manning at left-back, Wood and Lyanco Reis in central defence, and Bree at right-back.
Downes and Lallana form the holding midfield pair, while Stewart, Alcaraz and Fellows support striker Larin in the attacking line-up.
