ISLAMABAD: Foreign ministers of eight Arab-Islamic countries have strongly condemned recent Israeli actions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem, calling them violations of international law and a threat to regional peace and stability.

In a joint statement issued in Islamabad, the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Egypt, Türkiye, Indonesia, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates expressed concern over repeated incursions by extremist Israeli settlers into the mosque compound under the protection of Israeli security forces.

The ministers said the raising of the Israeli flag within the mosque courtyard and other related actions amounted to provocative steps that violate international law, relevant United Nations resolutions, and the historical and legal status quo of the holy site.

The statement also condemned what it described as ongoing Israeli policies aimed at changing the historical, legal, and demographic character of occupied East Jerusalem, warning that such moves undermine the sanctity of both Islamic and Christian holy places.

Reaffirming their commitment to preserving the status quo in Jerusalem, the ministers highlighted Jordan’s special custodial role over Islamic and Christian holy sites. They reiterated that the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound is a place of worship for Muslims and is administered by the Jerusalem Endowments and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department.

The eight countries held Israeli authorities responsible for preventing further escalation and called for an immediate halt to what they described as illegal and provocative actions, warning that continued violations could fuel tensions, extremism, and instability in the region.

They also reaffirmed support for the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination, backing the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The statement concluded by calling for a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace based on international law, UN resolutions, and the Arab Peace Initiative.
