PESHAWAR: A deputy assistant director of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Peshawar’s Hayatabad area, police said.

The victim, identified as Fahad, was parking his vehicle in the NADRA office premises and heading towards the building when he was attacked.

According to Peshawar police, initial evidence suggests that the killing may have stemmed from a personal enmity. However, investigators are working to identify the attackers and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Former Chairman Public Accounts Committee of Pakistan, Noor Alam Khan, tweeted that Fahad was his nephew and was shot by ‘terrorists’:

The killing comes amid recurring attacks on government employees, particularly police personnel and members of law enforcement agencies, in Peshawar and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

On October 10, unidentified assailants shot dead Election Commission of Pakistan Director General Shamshad Khan Mahsud in Tank district. Earlier, on September 28, a firing attack on a police mobile vehicle in Tank’s Wazirabad area left three personnel dead and two passers-by injured. In another attack on a police vehicle in the district on July 13, two officers, including an assistant sub-inspector, were killed and two others wounded.

On October 23, four police personnel, including Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Deputy Superintendent of Police Imranuddin, were killed in an attack in Karak district.

Separately, two police personnel were killed and another injured when a polio vaccination team came under fire in Mohmand district on November 3. Four polio workers were also abducted in Tank during the same month.

The latest incident comes against the backdrop of growing security concerns in the province. The federal government imposed governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on October 11, citing the deteriorating law and order situation and an increase in militant attacks. A provincial apex committee meeting was subsequently held, where officials reiterated their commitment to tackling terrorism.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also described restoring security and public order in the province as a top federal priority while addressing a cabinet meeting last week. He vowed that terrorism would be crushed.
