RIO DE JANEIRO: Neymar has been named in Brazil’s squad for next month’s World Cup, marking a major comeback for the forward after a prolonged injury-hit spell, manager Carlo Ancelotti confirmed on Monday.
The 34-year-old Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, returns to international football after missing much of the qualifying campaign due to repeated injuries that raised doubts over his place in the squad.
Brazil are chasing a record-extending sixth World Cup title, with Neymar’s inclusion adding experience and firepower to an already strong attacking unit.
Speaking at a squad announcement event in Rio de Janeiro, Ancelotti said Neymar had earned his place through recent performances and improved fitness rather than reputation alone.
“We evaluated Neymar throughout the year and noticed that recently he has been playing consistently and has improved his physical condition,” Ancelotti said.
“He has the same role and responsibilities as everyone else, but he is an experienced player. It’s true that in some positions we prioritised experience.”
Neymar, who has 79 international goals but has not played for Brazil since 2023, has faced scrutiny over his fitness following an injury-riddled stint at Al Hilal and a mixed return to boyhood club Santos.
He said earlier this week he felt ready to return to the international stage, insisting his fitness levels had improved steadily.
Brazil’s squad announcement took place at Rio’s Museum of Tomorrow, where journalists and guests gathered for a high-profile unveiling featuring music and entertainment.
The rest of the squad largely reflected Ancelotti’s recent selections, with key attacking names including Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, Matheus Cunha and rising star Endrick.
However, several notable absences included Real Madrid defender Éder Militão and Chelsea winger Estêvão, both ruled out through injury.
Ancelotti acknowledged the disappointment for those left out, saying: “Some of the players who were with us this year won’t be happy with this list. I’m sorry, and I want to thank everyone who was with us.”
Brazil will begin their World Cup campaign against Morocco on June 13 in New Jersey, before facing Haiti and Scotland in Group C.
