President, PM express dismay over police action against Baloch protesters

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi and Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar have expressed their dismay over the excessive use of force by the police against Baloch protesters in Islamabad on Thursday.

The protesters, who were demanding the release of missing persons and justice for the victims of enforced disappearances, were baton-charged and tear-gassed by the police, resulting in several injuries and arrests.

The caretaker prime minister informed the president that the detained protesters are being freed on personal bonds, and assured him that the situation was under control.

Meanwhile, Balochistan Governor Malik Abdul Wali Khan Kakar also met the president and discussed the issue of police violence on Baloch protesters.

The governor said that the police should have shown restraint and respect for the democratic right of peaceful protest.

He urged the police to release the protesters without any delay and avoid any further confrontation.

Both the leaders also stressed on the need to improve the law and order situation in Balochistan and address the grievances of the Baloch people. They also called for dialogue and reconciliation among all stakeholders to ensure peace and stability in the province.
