ISLAMABAD: Rare migratory flamingos, which had returned to Rawal Lake after several years, were allegedly hunted and killed in a disturbing incident that wildlife authorities have termed an environmental tragedy.

The Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) has launched an investigation into the killing of 12 to 13 flamingos along with other waterbirds, while a report has been forwarded to the Assistant Commissioner for further legal action.

Investigation launched after mass killing

According to IWMB officials, the incident took place when unidentified hunters allegedly exploited the absence of on-duty staff at the lake and, with the assistance of local individuals, targeted an entire flock of flamingos.

Authorities said empty cartridges and other key evidence have been recovered from the site, and preliminary findings suggest organised hunting activity. An FIR will be registered once initial inquiries are completed.

Suspicion over fishing contractor role

Officials have also raised suspicions regarding a contractor holding commercial fishing rights at Rawal Lake, though no formal accusation has been confirmed at this stage. The surviving flamingos reportedly fled the area in fear following the shooting.

Experts noted that flamingos are rarely seen at Rawal Lake, typically migrating to the Salt Range, making their sudden presence and subsequent killing particularly significant for conservation concerns.

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination has taken notice of the incident and indicated that strict action will be taken under wildlife protection laws if the allegations are substantiated.
