WEB DESK: The United States Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday eased travel restrictions for Iran’s national football team, allowing players and staff to arrive in the US two days before matches ahead of their crucial final Group G fixture.

Under the previous mandate, Team Melli were required to travel to match venues within 24 hours of kickoff. The rule forced the squad to operate on tight schedules during their first two Group G games, both held in Inglewood, California.

The revised directive now allows the Iranian team to travel to Seattle on Wednesday, giving them more time before Friday’s key match against Egypt.

However, other strict elements of the travel rules remain in place and the team is still required to return to its official base camp in Tijuana, Mexico, immediately after each match.

Team under strict restrictions

The strict travel requirements have become a major issue for the Iranian camp. Over the weekend, the Iranian Football Federation said it plans to file a formal complaint with FIFA over the logistical challenges.

Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei criticised the conditions, calling his team “the most affected team in the World Cup”. Despite the strain of travelling across the US-Mexico border for matches, the team has shown strong resilience on the field.

Knockout stage in sight

Against the odds, Iran remain unbeaten in the tournament. With two draws from their opening matches, Team Melli sit on two points and are close to history.

A win against group leaders Egypt on Friday would secure their first-ever place in the World Cup knockout stage, while a draw could also be enough depending on other results.

Egypt lead Group G with four points from a win and a draw. The stakes are high for the Seattle clash, with projections suggesting that qualification could set up a Round of 32 meeting with Australia on July 3 in Arlington, Texas.
