Xiaomi has officially opened access to its Android 17 Developer Preview Programme, making early builds available for four of its premium devices, including the Xiaomi 17 series and Xiaomi 15T Pro. The move signals the company’s accelerated push toward faster software adoption and closer alignment with Google’s latest Android cycle.
The rollout comes as the wider Android ecosystem begins testing the upcoming Android 17 release, codenamed “Cinnamon Bun.” Google has already released Android 17 Beta 4 for Pixel devices, which is expected to be the final beta phase before the stable version is launched.
Against this backdrop, several manufacturers have started enabling early access for developers, with Xiaomi now joining the list by offering its first Android 17 Developer Preview (DP1) for selected flagship models.
Flagship devices included in early access
The developer preview is available for the following Xiaomi devices:
- Xiaomi 17
- Xiaomi 17 Ultra
- Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi
- Xiaomi 15T Pro
According to Xiaomi, the programme is designed strictly for developers to test early system performance, explore new features, and provide feedback ahead of the public release.
In its announcement, the company stated that users on eligible devices can now experience Android 17 features through the preview build, although it emphasised that this version is not intended for general consumers.
Installation process and eligibility requirements
Unlike standard software updates, installing the developer preview requires a manual flashing process. Users must first download the ROM package, move it to the device’s file manager under the downloads section, and then navigate to system update settings.
From there, users need to access the Xiaomi HyperOS update section and activate developer options before selecting the update package manually. Once chosen, the installation begins, but the process completely wipes existing data on the device.
Xiaomi has strongly advised that only experienced users or developers attempt the installation, as improper flashing could lead to system issues. A full backup of personal data is recommended before proceeding.
The company has also specified that the devices must be running compatible HyperOS versions to support the Android 17 preview. These include:
- Xiaomi 17: HyperOS 3.0.301.0
- Xiaomi 17 Ultra and Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi: HyperOS 3.0.9.0
- Xiaomi 15T Pro: HyperOS 3.0.11.0
The early release reflects Xiaomi’s strategy of tightening its software development cycle and engaging developers earlier in the Android rollout process, while also preparing its flagship lineup for the next generation of mobile features.
