PESHAWAR: The border customs authorities intercepted a cook employed by the Border Security Force (BSF) at Torkham, confiscating $70,000 in US currency from his possession, Dawn News reported.

According to officials, a member of the customs department apprehended Zakriya, who worked as a cook in the official mess of the Border Security Force, as he attempted to transfer two packets containing US dollars to an unidentified Afghan national at the border zero crossing point.

While the Afghan individual managed to escape back into his country, Zakriya was promptly detained, and the significant sum of $70,000 was recovered from him.

Authorities have launched investigations to determine how an employee of a law enforcement agency became embroiled in currency smuggling activities at Torkham.

This incident marks the second instance in recent days where government personnel have been implicated in currency smuggling, following the arrest of two customs officials – an inspector and a sepoy – for their alleged involvement in smuggling US dollars into Afghanistan.

Both cases have been transferred to the Federal Investigation Agency for further scrutiny and investigation.
