ISLAMABAD: A 14-member committee under the Ministry of Education has been established to facilitate the reinstatement of student unions in universities and educational institutions.
Comprising researchers, education experts, and university vice chancellors, the committee is tasked with investigating pertinent issues associated with student unions.
The Students Union Restoration Committee is expected to submit its findings within 10 days.
QAU decides to revive students union
Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faez Isa, has expressed support for the initiative to reinstate student unions in educational institutions.
The Senate Education Committee has extensively deliberated the revival of student unions, which have been absent for over half a century, and advocates for their rejuvenation in accordance with contemporary trends and the aspirations of the youth.
Student unions were banned in 1984 by the then military dictator, Gen Ziaul Haq, as a means to quell student-led protests against his repressive policies.
This ban created a significant void in Pakistan’s political landscape.
