Pakistan observes Defense Day, Eid Milad un Nabi today

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is observing Defence and Martyrs Day and Eid Milad-un-Nabi simultaneously today (Saturday), marking a rare overlap of national and religious significance. The day has been declared a public holiday.

The day began with a 31-gun salute in Islamabad and 21-gun salutes in provincial capitals. Special prayers were offered for unity, progress, and national prosperity.

Defence and Martyrs Day commemorates September 6, 1965, when Indian forces crossed the border under the cover of night, only to be repelled by Pakistan’s armed forces and citizens. Fateha and Quran Khawani are being held nationwide for martyrs.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to martyrs and ghazis, calling September 6 a symbol of courage, unity, and resolve.

Prime Minister Shehbaz said the nation salutes its valiant armed forces and resilient people who have always defended the homeland with unmatched bravery. He said the armed forces, backed by the people, foiled aggression six decades ago and continue to protect Pakistan with dedication.

In a statement issued through Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza reaffirmed their pledge to uphold the sacred responsibility of defending the country.

They said September 6 epitomizes the unflinching resolve of a united nation that stood like “an insurmountable wall” against a militarily superior enemy. The armed forces also vowed to support flood victims and extend all-out help in natural disasters.

EID MILAD-UN-NABI (PBUH)

Meanwhile, Pakistanis are celebrating Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH), the birth anniversary of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Streets, mosques, and buildings are illuminated in green lights, while processions and Milad gatherings are being held nationwide.

President Zardari congratulated the nation and urged people to model their lives on the Prophet’s (PBUH) teachings of justice, peace, and brotherhood. He also noted that this year marks the 1500th anniversary of the Prophet’s birth.
