ISLAMABAD: Islamabad and its surrounding areas in Rawalpindi were engulfed in thick fog for approximately eight straight hours, creating significant challenges for the morning commuters on Tuesday.
At around 7:30 AM, the city’s key roads experienced a drastic reduction in visibility, resulting in minimal traffic flow.
Vehicles, both cars and bikes, that ventured onto the roads were compelled to navigate at remarkably low speeds to ensure safety amid the thick fog.
The phenomenon extended beyond Islamabad, with reports of fog also emerging from various parts of Rawalpindi.
This uncommon occurrence left many citizens surprised and bewildered, as such weather conditions are not typical for the region.
The adverse impact of the fog was not limited to surface transport alone; major motorways were forced to shut down due to the hazardous conditions.
The Motorway M5, spanning from Multan to Rohri, and the Motorway M1, connecting Peshawar to Islamabad, were both closed by the Motorway Police due to reduced visibility.
Similarly, the Swat Expressway, from Colonel Sher Khan to Ismaila, experienced closures as a result of the thick fog, as announced by the Motorway Police.
Notably, Motorway M5 from Ghotki to Rohri was also closed due to heavy rain, according to a spokesperson.
The severity of the fog prompted authorities to take swift action, prioritising the safety of commuters. Motorway M1, from Rashakai to Peshawar, was closed for traffic due to the heavy fog, adding to the series of closures across the affected regions.
As citizens grapple with the unexpected weather conditions, it remains to be seen how local authorities will manage the situation and provide necessary guidance to the public.
The closure of major transportation routes underscores the need for heightened awareness and precautionary measures during such weather events.
