NH&MP announces massive fines for traffic violations in 2024

WEB DESK: In the upcoming second phase, set to roll out on January 1st, 2024, the National Highways and Motorways Police (NH&MP) are poised to enforce a revamped fine schedule across all vehicle categories on the extensive network of National Highways and Motorways under their jurisdiction.

The initial phase, initiated on October 1st, 2023, specifically targeted motorways, Hazara, and Swat Motorway, resulting in augmented fines for cars and Jeeps.

Under the revised fine framework, the following penalties will be levied for diverse traffic infractions: Motorcyclists violating speed limits will face a fine of Rs1,500, while the penalty for cars is set at Rs2,500.

Public service vehicles (PSV) will incur a Rs10,000 fine, and goods vehicles will face a penalty of Rs5,000 for speed limit violations.

For instances of careless driving, motorcyclists, car drivers, and light transport vehicle (LTV) operators will be fined Rs1,500, with heavy transport vehicles (HTV) facing a Rs5,000 penalty.

Driving without a licence will result in a Rs5,000 fine for motorcycle riders, car drivers, and LTV operators, while PSVs and goods vehicles (HTV) will face a Rs10,000 penalty.

Overloading in cargo vehicles will attract a Rs10,000 fine, and failure to yield to emergency vehicles will result in a Rs5,000 fine for all traffic categories. Exceeding prescribed passenger limits in PSVs will incur a Rs5,000 fine.

Other fines include Rs1,000 for motorcycle riders without helmets, Rs1,500 for cars and LTVs without seat belts, and Rs3,000 for passengers and heavy vehicles without seat belts.

Mobile phone violations will result in a Rs500 fine for motorcycle riders and car drivers, Rs2,000 for LTVs, and Rs5,000 for passenger carriers and heavy vehicles.

Unregistered motorcycles, cars, and LTVs will face a Rs2,000 fine, while passenger carriers and heavy vehicles will incur a Rs5,000 penalty. Additionally, from January 1st, 2024, fines for all other traffic law violations listed in the 12th schedule will witness an increase.

Inspector General Sultan Ali Khawaja emphasised that this revision is geared towards prioritising passenger safety and ensuring the stringent enforcement of traffic regulations.
