ISLAMABAD: In response to the escalating traffic load comprising both motorcycles and cars in the federal capital, Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has intensified efforts to punish offenders, aiming to streamline traffic flow and enhance the safety of Islamabad’s residents.
Stringent enforcement measures have been implemented, featuring increased fines and the registration of First Information Reports (FIRs) for severe violations, particularly those involving underage driving—a pressing issue in recent times.
Recognizing the gravity of this matter, the ITP has undertaken a vigorous enforcement campaign, penalizing thousands of violators through fines and the impoundment of their motorbikes.
These measures have yielded positive results, with statistics indicating a monthly decline of 38,000 violation cases in October and November 2023 compared to the same period last year.
However, the narrative should not be one-sided but rather a shared responsibility. While the police are making efforts, it is crucial for parents and family members to ensure that their underage children refrain from driving freely on roads, jeopardizing their lives and the lives of others.
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Islamabad, Muhammad Sarfraz Virk, highlights the severity of underage driving as a significant contributor (65 per cent) to traffic violations.
Recent incidents involving underage drivers have resulted in fatal encounters. Nevertheless, the traffic police in Islamabad are actively addressing this issue, registering FIRs against underage drivers, impounding over 35,000 motorbikes, and seizing 17,000 vehicles engaged in various violations.

ITP has also reached out to parents, urging them to submit affidavits to prevent the recurrence of this practice and seeking their cooperation to instill discipline at home. The CTO advises parents not to be swayed by their love for their children, as it may lead to serious consequences.
The Ministry of Interior, in September of this year, announced an increase in traffic violation fines in Islamabad as part of a broader initiative to ensure road safety and strict adherence to traffic regulations.
Despite a decline in violations since the initiation of FIR registration, broader cooperation and additional resources are deemed necessary to further fortify road safety in the city.
The CTO stresses the need for parental involvement for complete success. Amateur drivers may face challenges in obtaining character certificates and other documents for domestic use and international travel.
