The situation is particularly dire in specific neighbourhoods, with Gulberg recording a shocking AQI of 850. Such a high number indicates a hazardous air quality that poses serious health risks to residents.
Other areas are also experiencing high levels of pollution, with Canal Road registering an AQI of 653 and Davis road showing a reading of 585.
Air pollution in Lahore is primarily attributed to a combination of factors, including vehicular emissions, industrial discharges, and construction activities.
The burning of crop residue in surrounding agriculture area, especially from India, exacerbates the problem further, as it leads to a thick smog blanketing the entire city.
The geographical layout of Lahore, combined with weather patterns, often traps pollutants close to the ground.
Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to such high levels of air pollution can lead to serious health issues, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular problems and other chronic conditions.
Vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly and people with pre-existing health conditions are particularly at risk.
