ISLAMABAD: In a meeting with potentially far-reaching social consequences, Pakistan’s Law Ministry, has decided to finalise the framework for a comprehensive Sex Offender Register (SOR).
The meeting attended by law minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and chairperson of the Child Rights Committee, Senator Ayesha Raza Farooq deliberated on the details of how the register will work as well as the required legislation to support it.
The rules will be finalised once approved by a special committee under the 2021 Anti Rape Act.
Tarar stressed the importance of the register in protecting the public, especially children and helping the police keep track of convicted sex offenders.
“The government aims to increase public safety and deter potential offenders with this measure,” he said.
Once in place, the register will help law enforcement agencies coordinate better and contribute to a safer society according to participants of the meeting.
