During the PTI government’s tenure, President Arif Alvi approved legislation removing the penalty for attempted suicide, marking a significant step in suicide prevention efforts.

Previously, under Section 325 of the Pakistan Penal Code, attempting suicide was a punishable offense, carrying a penalty of up to one year in simple imprisonment, a fine, or both.

According to statistics, one person dies by suicide every 40 seconds, and about five per cent of the global population attempts suicide at least once in their lifetime. Additionally, nearly 79 per cent of all suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.
