ISLAMABAD: The Senior Director of Pakistan Population Council, Dr Ali Mir, while addressing the National Media Coalition meeting organized by the Pakistan Population Council in connection with World Population Day, expressed concerns about gender equality in Pakistan.
Dr Ali Mir stated that Pakistan ranks at the bottom of the Global Gender Gap Index 2022.
Mir further highlighted the deep-rooted gender inequality in Pakistan, adding that only 21 percent of women are part of the labour force, while the representation of women in the National Assembly (NA) is also low.
During the meeting, the participants emphasized that 48 per cent of women in the country are illiterate, and 79 per cent are not part of the workforce. Furthermore, only ten per cent of women in the overall population have the ability to make decisions about their own health.
