ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated a crackdown on online content, blocking 2,369 URLs and 183 mobile applications through its newly implemented Web Monitoring System (WMS).

This move was revealed by the Minister in charge of the Cabinet Division in a written reply to the National Assembly.

The blocked websites were reportedly involved in disclosing personal data of citizens, while the mobile applications were found to be making citizens’ identity information public.

According to sources, the WMS employs deep packet inspection technology, enabling the PTA to manage Internet traffic at the gateway level and block illegal content more effectively.

The system has also been instrumental in identifying online IDs that propagate against state institutions, thereby making the PTA self-sufficient in content blocking, sources added.
