ISLAMABAD: Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar has said the Supreme Court’s (SC) judgment in reserved seats case poses no challenge to the government.
Addressing a news conference in Islamabad today, he said the ruling coalition has a clear majority both in the National and Punjab Assemblies.
Despite the judgment by the SC in reserved seats case, Tarar assured that the government is not threatened, as they still hold a majority with 209 members.
He also mentioned that the full decision regarding reserved seats has not yet been reviewed.
He recalled that the government passed the finance bill 2024-25 with majority.
PTI gets reserved seats; decisions of PHC and ECP set aside by the Supreme Court
The Law Minister said Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf was neither a party in the case nor had sought relief. He said it was Sunni Ittehad Council which had moved the court for the reserved seats.
“The PTI didn’t even seek this relief. These seats should have gone to the Sunni Ittehad Council,” Tarar said, adding that the law regarding reserved seats exists, and the court itself determined that the PTI had 80 members eligible for these seats.
Tarar further pointed out that these 80 members never approached any forum to claim their right to the reserved seats.
Responding to a question, the Law Minister said the government has not yet decided whether to file a review petition.
It is for the political parties, affected by the decision, to take a decision regarding filing a review petition.
