Special committee nominates Yahya Afridi next Chief Justice of Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The special parliamentary committee on Tuesday recommended the nomination of Justice Yahya Afridi as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan with a two-thirds majority, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar confirmed after the meeting.
Thes special parliamentary committee meeting for the appointment of the new Chief Justice of Pakistan following the implementation of the 26th Constitutional Amendment was held behid closed-doors in Committee Room No 5 in Parliament House. Members of the Sunni Ittehad Council boycotted the meeting.
According to sources, the majority of the parliamentary committee reached a consensus on the name of Justice Yahya Afridi.
Pakistan People’s Party member in the committee Farooq H Naek said that the committee has recommended the name of Justice Yahya Afridi for future Chief Justice of Pakistan. He said that it was now up to the prime minister and the president to act on the advice of the special parliamentary committee for the issuance of the notification.

Raja Pervez Ashraf, Farooq H Naek, Syed Naveed Qamar, Kamran Murtaza, Rena Ansar, Ahsan Iqbal, Shaista Pervaiz Malik, Azam Nazeer Tarar and Khawaja Asif participated in the meeting.
During the session, the law secretary presented the names of three judges for the appointment of the jhief justice. The panel of judges included Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Muneeb Akhtar and Justice Yahya Afridi.
After extensive deliberation, the committee reached a consensus on Justice Yahya Afridi with a two-thirds majority.
Earlier, the SIC, a parliamentary alliance of the PTI, officially announced its boycott of the special parliamentary committee after a meeting with a sub-committee of the special parliamentary committee — comprising Ahsan Iqbal, Rana Ansar, Pervaiz Ashraf, and Kamran Murtaza. SIC member Barrister Gohar Ali Khan informed the sub-committee that SIC members would not attend the special parliamentary committee meetings.
The special parliamentary committee meeting, initially scheduled for 4pm, was delayed till 8pm to pursued the SIC members to attend the session.
