ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has called on both the government and opposition to set aside their differences and focus on the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

Explainer: Article 63A review and today’s Supreme Court ruling

He urged the government to postpone the constitutional amendment process and opposition to delay the planned protests. Highlighting the importance of the international gathering, he stressed that internal political strife should be paused in the spirit of national unity.

Addressing the opposition parties, Maulana Fazl said, “Differences should be forgotten until the SCO summit”. He also questioned the urgency behind the government’s push for a constitutional amendment, saying, “We took nine months to prepare the 18th Amendment, and now we are being told to make edits within 24 hours”.

The JUI-F leader further critiqued the government’s stance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stating that its writ had weakened.

He stressed the importance of judicial reforms and urged that those involved in these reforms be brought into Parliament for proper discussion.

He lamented that his party’s influence was only being sought for specific political purposes.

The JUI-F Chief also spoke on the Israel-Palestine conflict and urged the Muslim Ummah to unite against Israeli “state terrorism” and demanded practical steps from Muslim countries to protect the rights of Palestinians.
