ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterating that the individuals accused in connection with the May 9 attacks will face trial in military courts, said that it was “a conspiracy against Pakistan within Pakistan”.

During an interview with Samaa News, the PM asserted that the government and institutions have resolved to pursue the constitutional and legal route to bring the perpetrators to justice.

He drew a parallel between the May 9 riots and the February 2019 Indian attack, describing them as “a conspiracy against Pakistan within Pakistan”. He emphasized that there would be “no concession” and severe punishment would be meted out.

As the coalition government nears its completion, the PM reflected on his 14-month term and expressed his focus on “saving the country” from what he deemed as “the destructive politics” of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The premier further disclosed that the government has forged an exemplary constitutional coalition with the armed forces.

Regarding the alleged facilitation of the PTI chairman by the Supreme Court, PM Shehbaz remarked that the chairman had obtained “18 bails in a record 18 minutes.”

While expressing respect for the courts, he asserted the government’s determination to take the issue to the people, just as they had done in Parliament. The PM stated that he was not concerned if some judges took offense.

Furthermore, the PM accused the PTI chairman of negatively impacting Pakistan’s foreign policy.

He pointed out that the chairman’s “erratic behavior and personal attacks on other countries” had resulted in strained relations with China, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE. However, he assured that the government has been working to mend those relationships.

Addressing past allegations against him, PM Shehbaz denied the former prime minister’s claims of making absurd accusations against China during meetings and being involved in corruption with Chinese companies.

Reflecting on the coalition government’s tenure, the PM acknowledged the numerous challenges they inherited, including floods, rising oil and commodity prices due to the Russia-Ukraine war, and economic mismanagement.

He highlighted significant milestones achieved, such as signing an agreement with the International Monetary Fund, importing oil from Russia, and the ongoing negotiations for a cost-effective LNG agreement with Azerbaijan.

According to the PM, these steps were part of the government’s efforts to revitalize the economy and improve the lives of the people.

The premier also confirmed that elections would take place as scheduled.

He stated, “We will step down from the government at the end of our term, and the law will take its course against the cases filed against PTI chairman.”
