ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has filed a constitutional petition in the Supreme Court, challenging the amendments to Election Act, 2017.
The petition, submitted by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, calls for the annulment of the amendments in the Act recently passed by the National Assembly. The petition was filed under Article 184/3, facilitated by prominent lawyer and PTI member Salman Akram Raja.
The Federation and the ECP have been named as respondents in this case.
Election Act Amendment Bill 2024 passes by majority vote
PTI argues that the Election Amendment Act is unconstitutional and illegal. They have urged the Supreme Court to immediately halt the ECP from allocating reserved seats to other political parties.
Furthermore, PTI has requested that special seats for women and non-Muslims be allocated to them, in accordance with their submitted lists of reserved seats candidates.
The petition emphasises PTI’s entitlement to special requests following a decision made by the Supreme Court full bench on July 12.
