Recap: Australia all out for 337 as both Bumrah and Siraj take four

Bumrah

ADELAIDE: After Australia quickly dealt with India in their first innings, holding them down to just 180 runs thanks to an incredible six wicket haul by Mitchell Starc, the Aussies got to work with the bat. But Jasprit Bumrah did his best to keep India alive.

Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj were the star bowlers for India, taking four wickets each. Australia were all out for 337, a score made possible thanks to Travis Head’s fantastic knock.

AUSTRALIA’S INNINGS

Bumrah got the first breakthrough of Australia’s first innings in the 11th over. Usman Khawaja continued his streak of lacklustre performances, only scoring 13 runs before a delivery from Bumrah ricocheted off the thick edge of the Aussie’s bat, and into the hands of Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma, at first slip.

It was a great breakthrough for India, but the Aussies didn’t allow the dismissal to disrupt their rhythm. Nathan McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne took charge, scoring 67 runs together on 153 deliveries. But, Bumrah would throw another wrench into the works in the 37th over, one that looked like a ball which brushed past the outside edge of McSweeney’s bat on the way to Indian wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant. McSweeney would fall 11 runs short of making his first ever test half century.

Labuschagne however, would make his 21st half century in his test career, as he went on to score 64 runs off 126 deliveries, hitting nine fours along the way. He would eventually be dismissed in the 54th over on a delivery from Nitish Kumar Reddy that the Aussie tried to play through gully. Instead, he steered the ball right into the hands of Yashasvi Jaiswal.

But, before Reddy got his first, Bumrah got his third, dismissing Steven Smith in the 41st over. Smith only scored two runs before the delivery from the Indian fast bowler cut across the pitch, nicking the Aussie’s bat as he tried to play a leg glance. Pant dove to his left and took an excellent catch.

Ravichandran Ashwin took a wicket as well. He dismissed Mitchell Marsh in the 64th over as the delivery from the spin bowler caught the slightest of edges on its way to Pant.

Mohammed Siraj then took two wickets. His first came in the 77th over, as the delivery from Siraj brushed against Alex Carey’s bat before Pant took the catch. Not long after, Siraj got the biggest breakthrough of the match, dismissing Travis Head who had been on a tear.

Head’s excellent batting kept Australia marching forward, as the Aussie scored the eight century of his career, and then went on to core another 40 runs. He hit an astounding 17 fours and four sixes during his innings. Siraj brought that to an end in the 82nd over, as he bowled Head with a yorker. Siraj was animated in his celebration, something that Head nor the Australian crowd appreciated, which they made evident with their boos.

Bumrah would then get back in on the action, dismissing Australian skipper Pat Cummins in the 85th over with a length elivery that hurtled past the inside edge of the Aussie’s bat, brushed his pad, and crushed the stumps.

Two wickets remained and Siraj took them in quick succession. Mitchell Starc fell in the 86th over, after he chipped the ball to mid-off where Harshit Rana took the catch. Scott Boland was dismissed for a duck two overs later, as Siraj’s delviery snuck past the outside edge and took out the off stump.
