Meta to discontinue Messenger Lite?

Messenger Lite

WEB DESK: Meta has announced to shutdown Messenger Lite, the lightweight version of Facebook’s messaging app.

According to media reports, the app is set to be phased out starting September 18, 2023.

However, the exact reasons behind the discontinuation have not been disclosed, but users have been informed about the upcoming change.

The reports said that app has been removed from the Google Play Store for new users, and current users will no longer be able to access it from September 18.

Originally introduced by Meta in 2016, Messenger Lite was aimed at Android users with older devices or in regions with limited internet connectivity. Despite being initially available only for Android, it was extended to iOS users in 2018 before being discontinued in 2020.

Meanwhile, Facebook’s Help Center clarified that iOS users can keep the app for chat history access but won’t be able to reinstall it from the App Store once deleted.

Messenger Lite is a simplified version of the main Messenger app, offering essential features while consuming considerably less storage space. The specific storage savings depend on the device and app version.

For Messenger Lite users, Meta suggests two alternatives. Firstly, switching to the main Messenger app, though feasibility depends on device capabilities. Secondly, those seeking lighter alternatives may consider Facebook Lite as It does basic things and lets users chat without needing the separate Messenger app.

Choosing between the two apps depends on individual needs and preferences. Users are encouraged to explore options based on device capabilities, storage limitations, and their preferred level of functionality.
