KABUL: The death toll from flash floods in Afghanistan has risen to 300, with more than 1000 houses destroyed in the northern province of Baghlan on Sunday.
The flash flood occurred after heavy rainfall hit five districts in Baghlan province on Friday night. The country’s unrecognised government was quick to start relief operations in the affected areas.

Hundreds of people are feared dead due to the sudden flood. International observers are warning that the toll could rise further as more storms hit the region.
According to reports, rescue operations in the region have begun, with the military searching for possible victims trapped under the mud and rubble.
A spokesperson for the Afghan Taliban government stated that tents and food were provided to the affected families. Meanwhile, the main road connecting Kabul to Baghlan was closed.
Experts say that the unusual weather conditions were a result of climate change and the rise in unpredictable weather conditions world over. The heavy rainfall led to sudden floods as the drainage basins were overwhelmed and the water flowed. Afghanistan also experienced an extremely dry winter that hindered the soil’s ability to absorb water.
