TEL AVIV/BEIRUT: The Israeli army claimed that it has managed to kill Hashim Safiuddin, the acting head of Lebanon-based rebel group Hezbollah during a recent military operation.

According to reports, Safiuddin was targeted in an attack on Beirut three weeks ago.

Hashim Safiuddin, who was a cousin of former Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, held an important position within the organisation.

His death marks yet another blow to the rebel group fighting against the illegal settlers in occupied Palestine.

Israel has in recent weeks shifted its brutal bombardment and wreaked havoc across Lebanon as it claims to be targeting Hezbollah. Thousands of innocent Lebanese has perished in the wake of airstrikes by the occupying force.

The Iran-backed Hezbollah has been involved in various conflicts with Israel over the years since the group was founded. However, it has never suffered the extent of damage as this year.

Earlier, Israel was involved in explosion of pagers used by Hezbollah fighters, that maimed or injured thousands of its members while several succumbed to injuries from the blasts.

Within few days, Israel launched a relentless assault on a sovereign state by opening a second front in the ongoing Gaza war.

Hezbollah declared support for Hamas, the Palestinian group vowed to removing Israel from occupied Palestine. The group was formed in late 1980s, as Yasser Arafat’s Palestinian Liberation Front (PLF) mellowed out and accepted the two-state ‘solution’.

The Israeli military did not provide specific details regarding the circumstances of the attack that led to Safiuddin’s death. However, the occupying force claims that the operation was part of a broader strategy to weaken Hezbollah’s leadership and operational capabilities.

Hezbollah has not yet confirmed the death of Safiuddin, and it remains to be seen how the development will impact the rebel group’s activities and its response to Israeli brutality.
