White House willing to train Ukrainian pilots

WASHINGTON: The White House has announced its willingness to facilitate the training of Ukrainian F-16 pilots on US soil, but cautioned that the process may require a substantial timeframe.

White House spokesperson John Kirby addressed reporters, emphasizing that the integration of the jets into Ukraine’s air fleet and the arrival of the planes themselves will necessitate considerable time.

The Pentagon confirmed on August 9 that President Joe Biden has granted approval for the training of Ukrainian pilots to operate F-16 fighter jets. This decision aligns with broader efforts to enhance Ukraine’s self-defense capabilities and overall military strength over the long term.

Kirby emphasized that beyond pilot training and aircraft transfer, extensive arrangements for maintenance, logistics, and sustainment must be established for the successful inclusion of modern aircraft like the F-16 in Ukraine’s fleet.

Reports indicate that the first batch of Ukrainian pilots undergoing F-16 training will not be prepared to operate the jets until the summer of 2024. Initially, six pilots, equivalent to half a squadron, will undergo training, with an additional two pilots identified as reserve candidates.

This initiative underscores the interest of US in bolstering Ukraine’s military capabilities and enhancing its defense infrastructure.
