WhatsApp prepares wider rollout of ‘Liquid Glass’ redesign

Meta’s messaging platform WhatsApp is continuing work on a major visual overhaul inspired by Apple’s “Liquid Glass” design language, though the update remains unavailable to most users despite months of testing.
The redesign, first spotted in late 2025 within beta versions of the app, introduces subtle interface changes aimed at creating a more modern and layered look. Early updates included tweaks to navigation elements and portions of the main chats screen, signalling a broader shift in the app’s design direction.
However, progress has been slow. Even users enrolled in beta testing programmes have reported limited access to the updated interface, suggesting that parent company Meta is taking a gradual approach to rolling out the changes.

In-chat interface revamp in development
According to reports from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is now working to extend the Liquid Glass aesthetic to the in-chat experience, a key part of the app used by billions globally.
Although the redesigned interface has not yet been officially released, it was reportedly activated through internal testing. The updated layout features a floating chat bar and a semi-transparent navigation bar, incorporating visual elements such as depth, blur and shadow effects to create a more dynamic appearance.
These changes are expected to bring greater visual consistency across the app, aligning the chat interface with earlier updates already applied to other sections, including the voice message player and parts of the chats tab.
Slow rollout frustrates users
Despite continued development, the rollout of the Liquid Glass design has been notably gradual. Since initial testing began, only a small number of users have gained access to the new interface, while the majority continue using the older design.
Industry observers suggest that Meta may be delaying a wider release until the redesign is fully integrated across all features of the app. This phased strategy could help avoid inconsistencies in user experience, but has also led to frustration among users eager to try the updated look.
There is currently no confirmed timeline for when the redesign will be made widely available. As with many beta-tested features, updates referenced in development code do not always translate into immediate public releases.
For now, the latest developments indicate that work on the overhaul is ongoing, with a broader rollout likely only once the company finalises the design across the entire platform.
