According to reports, Lahore currently holds the distinction of being the second most polluted city in the world.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lahore reached alarming levels, with an overall reading of 365, indicating “hazardous air quality”. This poses huge health risks to the 14.4 million Lahore residents; in particular, children, the elderly and those with pre-existing respiratory illnesses.
In the busy intersection of Bhatta Chowk, the AQI peaked at 491, a figure well above the threshold for severe health warnings.
Similarly, the prominent commercial and residential area of Gulberg reported an AQI of 400.
The persistent smog and poor air quality are exacerbated by vehicular emissions, industrial discharges, and seasonal agriculture burning in surrounding areas.
The impact of the poor air quality in the provincial capital is not limited to residents’ health only; it also has huge economic implications. Air pollution can lead to increased medical costs, reduced worker productivity and a decline in the overall quality of life for the residents.
