The 26th constitutional amendment pertains to huge changes made to the country’s judiciary, parliamentary and executive frameworks. It removed the Supreme Court’s suo motu prerogative and capped the Chief Justice’s tenure to three year.

It reconstituted the judicial commission to oversee judicial appointments and established a 12-member special committee in parliament to nominate the chief justice from the three most senior judges.

The amendment also aimed to abolish ‘riba’ by January 2028, and modified the procedures for suo motu actions, placing them under a judicial committee.

The chief election commissioner was to remain in office until a replacement as appointed and the provincial advocate generals were now allowed to participate in legal discussions within their respective provincial assemblies.
