ISLAMABAD: Shaza Fatima Khawaja assumed charge as State Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication after a notification was issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

This appointment marks a pivotal move towards bolstering the technological landscape of the nation. Notably, Khawaja stands out as the sole female nominee for the federal cabinet.

According to a news report by ProPakistani, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is keen on prioritising the development of the IT sector, with a focus on enhancing exports within the domain.

This appointment underscores the government’s dedication to advancing the IT sector. In line with this vision, the Prime Minister has convened a meeting today at the PM House to discuss strategies for the IT sector’s growth.

Khawaja, a seasoned Pakistani politician, has been serving as a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan since June 2013. Her previous roles include Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Youth Affairs, with the rank of Minister of State.

Having secured her seat in the National Assembly as a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate in the 2013 general elections, Khawaja has held various positions, including parliamentary secretary for the Ministry of Trade, Commerce, and Textile, and Vice President of the Young Parliamentarians Forum of the National Assembly.

After securing her seat in the National Assembly during the 2018 general elections, Khawaja was appointed as the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Youth Affairs in Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s federal cabinet in May 2022.

With her recent re-election in the 2024 general elections, she has once again assumed a prominent role in government, enabling her to contribute her expertise towards the advancement of the IT sector.
