lawyers' movement

ISLAMABAD: Hamid Khan, a senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), has announced a lawyers’ movement starting from September 19 to oppose the proposed constitutional amendments.

Speaking outside the Supreme Court, he criticised the government, asserting that no new constitutional court can be established without the Supreme Court’s authority, and vowed that lawyers would resist any such move. The movement will begin at the Lahore High Court (LHC), he said.

Hamid Khan described the current environment as unsuitable for introducing a constitutional package, claiming that it was akin to a “funeral” for the constitution. He urged lawyers to reject the proposed amendment bill, comparing the situation to their opposition to former president Pervez Musharraf.

Additionally, he argued that no parallel court could be formed and objected to any changes in the procedure for appointing the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) as well. He demanded that the notification confirming Justice Mansoor Ali Shah as the next CJP, effective from October 26, be issued promptly.

Hamid Khan urged the lawyers across Pakistan to oppose the constitutional amendments, stating that the legal community’s strength, symbolised by the “black coat”, holds significant influence in the country. He called upon lawyers to unite and discard the constitutional package.
