WEB DESK: Xiaomi, the Chinese tech giant known for its smartphones, has recently ventured into the electric vehicle market with its SU7 model.
Following the success of this model, Xiaomi has now introduced the SU7 Ultra, a hyper-sports version that aims to be the fastest four-door car globally, regardless of being gas or electric.
The original SU7 has been well-received as an affordable electric sports car, drawing comparisons to the Porsche Taycan. Priced at approximately 215,900 RMB (around $30,000 USD) for the base 299hp model, it offers significant value.
An upgraded “Max” version is available for about $41,000 USD, boasting 673hp and enhanced performance. The SU7’s launch was met with overwhelming demand, leading to a seven-month waiting list with around 50,000 orders placed almost immediately.
Despite some concerns over quality and durability, the SU7 has garnered positive reviews. Xiaomi is now raising the stakes with the SU7 Ultra, an extreme performance version of the SU7 Max. The SU7 Ultra is equipped with three motors, generating a staggering 1548hp. This includes two of Xiaomi’s V8s motors and one V6s motor, all electric despite their names suggesting otherwise.
This immense power enables the SU7 Ultra to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 1.97 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h (124 mph) in 5.96 seconds, with a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph).
The vehicle’s regenerative braking system provides up to 0.6G of force, while its physical brakes can generate up to 2.36G, allowing it to decelerate from 100 km/h to a complete stop in just 25 meters.
Weighing 1900 kg (4188 lbs), the SU7 Ultra is relatively light for its class, thanks to carbon fibre body panels designed for weight reduction.
The car is wider and longer than the SU7 Max, with modified panels for better aerodynamics and cooling, and a rear wing generating 2145 kg (4728 lbs) of downforce. The Ultra features CATL’s new Qilin II battery, which can charge from zero to full in 12 minutes when connected to an 897V charger.
Xiaomi intends to test the SU7 Ultra’s capabilities at the Nürburgring in October, aiming to set a new lap record for a four-door EV.
Currently, the Porsche Taycan holds the record at 7 minutes and 7 seconds. With over 500 more horsepower than the Taycan, the SU7 Ultra has a promising chance, though managing battery temperatures will be crucial.
Xiaomi has yet to announce the pricing or availability of the SU7 Ultra. As it stands, the vehicle is still in the prototype stage, but given the success of the SU7, there is significant anticipation for its potential market release.
